Part Three of In The Search of Elves

Here's the next part of In The Search of Elves! Here's a link to the last part I posted, in case you forget what's going on. Tell me what you think! :)

"So, Grandfather?" asked Elsa "Have you any news for us?"

"Yeess... But it's not good news."

"Tell us anyway." said Elsa's mother sadly

"A few men were caught trying to escape the other night." he paused "They were hung today."

Grandfather shook his head sadly. The dinner table got very quite.

"Well now." said Mother briskly "How was your trip up here?"

"Not too bad. My back didn't give me too much trouble. Tis' just a little bit stuff. It'll always be stiff now, nothing can take it out."

"Magic would!" cried Elsa

"Well now, I suppose it would, if there really was such a thing."

"Oh! But there is! Magic is real!"

"No, it isn't." said Fabry

"Elves use magic!" cried Elsa

"And there's no such thing as elves." said Fabry

"Yes there is! Or least there was... But I bet there still some around here somewhere."

"Girls! Stop!" said their father sternly "We don't know if there are any elves left. They certainly were real many years ago. But now we're not sure. And as for magic, well, some people believe in it, and others don't."

"Well I believe in all." said Elsa her eyes flashing

"As do I!" cried her mother smiling at her.

Fabry just shook her head.

Then the dinner conversation turned to other things. Elsa couldn't help but notice that all the grown ups were...skittish, maybe afraid. They looked like they were very scared of something, but they never mentioned it. What was the matter?

After dinner Elsa and Fabry cleaned up, then said good-night, and went to bed. Fabry soon fell asleep, drifting off into her worlds of dreams and happiness, but Elsa didn't fall asleep. She stayed awake thinking.

Elsa was a firm believer in elves. She longed for nothing more then to meet one. Mother had told her and Fabry stories of them, and other magical things, when they were little. Elsa still believed every word. Fabry didn't.

Down below in the kitchen the grownups were talking. Loud, dark, scary things. They all seemed mad. Curious, Elsa sat up in her bed, trying to listen.
